Services

Public Health Assessment - A public nurse is available to do free health assessments every second and fourth Tuesday at the Senior Recreation Center, 145 W. Magnolia Avenue. She monitors blood pressure and weight, and counsels residents of all ages on general health issues. New clients should call the nurse at 201-368-1522 on Tuesday Mornings from 9:30am-11am.

Child Health Conference - The Board sponsors a free Well Baby Clinic, open to all residents, to which they can bring their children from 2 months to 6 years for immunizations, physical examinations, evaluations, counseling and referrals. For additional information, call 201-845-2900 x211.

Annual Flu/Pneumonia Clinic - Resident senior citizens and those residents under 65 who are immune compromised can get free flu and pneumonia inoculations. This clinic is generally held in October or November. Call 201-845-2900 x 211 for additional information.

Annual Health Fair - Every spring, the Board sponsors a Family Health Fair at the Senior Recreation Center. It is a great opportunity for adults and children to get free health screenings and to pick up information on numerous subjects. Vision, hearing, diabetes, oral cancer, blood pressure and chiropractic are just some of the screenings available. The Fair is an opportunity for the entire family to come out and talk to professionals on a number of issues. Children can also take advantage of the health screenings and talk to Maywood Police officers about bike and traffic safety. There are clowns to entertain them with face painting and balloon sculpture.

Free Rabies Clinic - Every January, we have a local veterinarian administer free rabies inoculations to our resident pets. A current rabies inoculation certificate is required for licensing cats and dogs. Our municipal ordinance requires that all cats and dogs be licensed annually.

Pets

All dogs and cats seven months or older are required to be licensed. Licenses are issued by the Borough Clerk's office at 15 Park Avenue, 201-845-2900 x200. Maywood has a municipal ordinance which requires dog owners to pick up after their pets. No more than three dogs or cats are permitted per household.

General Nuisances

Grass & Weeds - Overgrown grass and weeds are prohibited by municipal ordinance. Additionally, the strip of grass adjacent to the curb is the property owner's responsibility and must be cut along with the lawn.

West Nile Virus - Since the virus is primarily carried by crows, and transmitted by mosquitoes, we will be monitoring the incidence of dead crows. The location of dead crows should be relayed to the Health Department Monday-Wednesday, 8:30am-4:30pm, and to the Maywood Police Department at any other time. Residents are urged to reduce mosquito breeding on their property by eliminating sources of standing water such as empty cans, buckets, flowerpots, old tires, trash cans, pool covers, etc.

Feeding Birds & Animals - Putting food on the ground for birds, squirrels or other animals is prohibited because it creates a food source for rodents. Bird food should be placed in feeders which are kept off the ground. Food should not be placed outside for stray cats.

Accumulations of yard debris or wood - placing wood/debris/firewood directly on the ground creates a harborage for rodents and should be avoided.
